Am I overreacting for quitting a babysitting job on the spot after the mom insulted me?
-
Making important decisions with long-lasting consequences based on split-second emotions is generally inadvisable, but there comes a point where boundaries are crossed that can't simply be overlooked. And it gets tricky in instances like childcare, particularly babysitting and nannying, which often take place within the employer's home, where a professional service is being rendered in a very personal setting, where issues of value and respect can quickly get overlooked.
A 22-year-old babysitter decided to quit on the spot when the mother of the two children she was watching decided to force her to accept a significantly reduced flat rate for a full day, rather than the hourly rate she had been charging. The parent demanded professionalism but quickly began not showing it herself, turning to accusations and inappropriate personal insults targeted at nothing but causing emotional distress. What made this situation stand out was not necessarily the pay dispute itself but how quickly it took a left turn from professional and got straight up personal.
She wasn't just told that she would have to take a pay cut; rather, she was accused of greed for wanting her usual pay and even personally insulted. Her decision to leave immediately didn't necessarily reflect an emotional response but rather the fact that she would be degrading herself by staying.

No, as a childcare giver myself, I wish more babysitters/nannies would stand up for themselves as you did. -

If she doesn't want to pay you a professional rate, then she doesn't get to expect 'professional' behavior out of you.
